ENGLISH VERSION
Did you know that Bjørnø had a summer collective where Gasolin', one of the most famous Danish bands, came and did trial recordings of their early albums?
You can hear more about that in a moment...
Bjørnø has had a school since 1809, and in 1890, a new school was built near the island's old village pond. All of the island's children were taught by a single teacher who had classes in the morning and again in the afternoon. The school closed in 1964, and since then, the island's children have taken the Bjørnø boat to go to school in Faaborg.
In 1971, the old school was sold to a group of young students from a college in Copenhagen. When the college was cleared of residents and subsequently demolished, some of the former residents decided to maintain the community they had built and bought Bjørnø School as a shared vacation home.
And as some of the people of Bjørnø said: "Now, the hippies have arrived at Bjørnø."
It was a completely new experience for the island to have young people with a different lifestyle living there, and the new summerhouse owners were met with curiosity. Together, they enjoyed the sunset over Dyreborg, a small city on the coast of the mainland, with coffee or a glass of wine on the pier, a tradition called "Pier Coffee," which the permanent residents of Bjørnø quickly embraced. This custom has become a hallmark of Bjørnø and is mentioned in virtually all descriptions of the island.
Today, islanders and tourists still gather on the pier at sunset with coffee, wine, and beer, and the local musician on the island is happy to play a few tunes on the cornet.
It was also the residents of the school who started the outdoor communal dining on the pier, which is also a tradition on the island.
As said, the famous Danish rock band, Gasolin', also visited the island multiple times. They had a connection to the college in Copenhagen and had heard about the new summer collective on Bjørnø. For a couple of years, the school was used to record trial versions of their new vinyls before they were recorded in the studio.
Today, the school is owned by one of the original collective members.
